Naples offers a vibrant blend of art, culture, history and culinary delights
Naples is not only gorgeous and unique, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and it is an extraordinary place to visit. The third largest city in Italy, it has a historic city centre which is a maze of narrow streets filled with artisan shops, bustling markets, museums and fountains and cathedrals, and stunning architecture. And that’s just on the surface. Below the city lie the San Gennaro Catacombs from the 3rd century, with graves and crypts lining a twisting tangle of tunnels. Close to both Pompeii and Herculaneum, Naples contains the National Archaeological Museum which houses the treasures brought from both sites during archaeological digs including mosaics, statues and a myriad of oil lamps in the shapes of phalluses, as well as extraordinary items from the ancient world. Just down the street is the Cappella Sansevero, famous for its remarkable sculpture of the Veiled Christ, and Santa Chiara Church with its famed mosaic courtyard that survived a bombing during WW2 that destroyed most of the cathedral. Said to be the birthplace of pizza, Naples is filled with pizzerias serving Pizza Margherita—a pizza with a backstory. Other establishments serve fried pizza, potato dishes, the fabulous rum baba, and spaghetti alla Puttanesca featuring a sauce of tomatoes, olives, capers, garlic, and anchovies. And we can’t forget street food like Frittatina di Pasta, deep-fried pasta with béchamel sauce, provolone cheese, peas, and sometimes ham or salami. There’s a castle—Castel dell'Ovo on the waterfront—with Mount Vesuvius in the background, lush gardens at the Capodimonte Museum, and less than 45 minutes away is Reggia di Caserta, a palazzo that rivals Versailles in size, grandeur and the extent of its gardens. Our specialized InTo Tours offer all this, and more. Come with us to experience it all. Check out the itinerary below.
